Winter Desperation 2015, volume 1

Now that the positive vibes from my good play at the end of the season have completely evaporated, I'm forced to face the truth. This is, and will continue to be for some time, a bleak winter season for golfers.

I feel eons removed from my last round; the next round lies beyond the foreseeable future. Where does that leave me?

I feel like a tiny dot in the middle of a blank white page.

When you are midstream, there's nothing to do but try to keep moving forward and hope to reach the other side. Let's not pussy around this thing: desperation has set in. I know not how many days have passed since I played golf; don't even want to check.

These days the question of how, as a non-golfer, to maintain a "blog about golf" hangs overhead constantly. Hey, there's a lot going on in pro golf, why don't you just write about that? Well I don't really feel like it, that's why.

It's now Arctic Time here in the Northeast. Most of the land is well blanketed by a crunchy permafrost. Temps range from cold to bitter cold. But this is no longer "cold weather". This is life. To us folk, golf is just another one of those quaint things people on the TV do.

If there was such thing as a golf poverty line, Manhattan would exist below it. But even here help can be found by those who have nowhere else to turn: the driving range, at Chelsea Piers. It stays open in just about any kind of weather. A cold and meager shelter, but it's just enough for nursing a dying ember through another day.

Anyone who plays golf knows you're not supposed to play "golf swing" while you're trying to play golf. Well, these are the days when "golf swing" is the only game in town.

It's sub 40 standing here on the bank of the Hudson River, which has started to freeze over. Winds blowing, hands are numb. Can't feel the clubface, can hardly feel my own face. But the swing feels not half bad. But about forty-five balls in and I've had my fill.

Who am I kidding. There is pointless golf nonsense to yap about. There always is. I have just been in the dumps, that's all. There's still some more I need to discuss on the topic of winter golf. Hang in there. We are going to pull through this if it takes everything we have.

Reading the March, 2015, Golf Digest, article on off season golf made me think of your many pithy advice on clothing, preparation and play during the off season. YOU should have written the article, not some fancy boy who has probably never played after October 1.

    1. Thanks man. If only you had some pull in the golf universe, I'd be set.

  2. I like the dedication.

    1. Thanks. But I don't think of it as dedication any more than a coffee drinker reaching for the morning cup. Unconscious behavior.
